How the PDF editor works

Local editing with exact readback

The editor reads your PDF in a browser Web Worker powered by qpdf WebAssembly. After writing, it re-reads the output to confirm each supplied field matches.

Document properties

Title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, producer, dates, and other supported entries from the PDF Info dictionary.

Catalog XMP

Supported Dublin Core, Adobe PDF, XMP, rights, and location fields from the catalog Metadata stream.

Precisely scoped replacement

Old Info entries and catalog XMP are removed. The new Info dictionary contains only the six supported fields you supplied, while blank fields are omitted.

Scope and limitations

Document-property editing, not PDF hardening

This tool edits document-level Info fields and removes catalog XMP. It does not inspect or modify page content or active and embedded objects.

Included here

  • Inspect the PDF trailer Info dictionary.
  • Inspect the catalog-level XMP metadata stream.
  • Replace Info with the non-empty Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer values you supply, remove catalog XMP, and re-scan the new copy.
  • Run the file workflow locally in a browser Web Worker.

Not included

  • No claim of PDF sanitization or security hardening.
  • No removal of scripts, actions, attachments, forms, or annotations.
  • No search for hidden text, redactions, layers, or metadata inside embedded files.
  • No processing of encrypted or password-protected PDFs.

A visible local workflow

Inspect, edit, and verify in three steps

The current record stays visible before a new copy is written, and download stays locked until the output passes its re-scan.

  1. 01

    Inspect

Read the trailer Info dictionary and catalog XMP, then pre-fill supported fields with existing values where possible.

  2. 02

    Edit

Update the fields you want. The new Info dictionary contains only your non-empty values, and catalog XMP is removed.

  3. 03

    Verify

Re-read the new file for exact field values, XMP absence, and unchanged page count before enabling download.

PDF editor questions

What changes when you edit PDF metadata

The important details are which fields are written, what is discarded during the rewrite, and what this narrow tool does not inspect.

Which metadata fields can I edit?
You can edit Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer. These are standard Info dictionary fields. Other Info entries, dates, and trapping status are removed during rewriting.
Does the PDF leave my device?
No. Reading, rewriting, and re-scanning run in a local browser worker. The tool does not send the filename, PDF bytes, metadata values, or a file hash to a processing API.
What happens to XMP metadata?
Catalog-level XMP is removed from the output to prevent conflicts with the updated Info dictionary. The tool does not create new XMP. Metadata inside embedded files is not affected.
What if I leave a field blank?
Blank fields are omitted. The output Info dictionary contains only the supported fields where you supplied a value.
What happens to digital signatures?
Rewriting the file invalidates any existing digital signature. The tool checks for common signature structures and asks for explicit consent before proceeding. It does not validate the signer, certificate, or cryptographic status.
Can it process password-protected PDFs?
No. Encrypted and password-protected PDFs fail closed and remain unchanged. Password entry and decryption are outside this local tool's current scope.
Does removing metadata make a PDF safe?
No. Metadata removal is not PDF sanitization. Scripts, actions, forms, attachments, annotations, hidden page content, redactions, and embedded files require a separate hardening workflow.
What are the current file limits?
The tool processes one PDF at a time, up to 25 MB. Malformed PDFs, files that require structural recovery, and encrypted PDFs are rejected without creating an output.
Are there file restrictions?
The tool accepts one PDF at a time, up to 25 MB. Encrypted, password-protected, malformed, or recovery-requiring PDFs are rejected.

Need a different PDF metadata task?

Inspect document properties without rewriting, or remove both supported metadata locations from a newly rewritten copy.
