What's hiding in your images?

Every image from a phone, camera, or AI generator can carry invisible metadata. When you share the original file, that data may go along:

  • GPS location

    Exact coordinates of where the photo was taken, sometimes precise enough to reveal a home or workplace.

  • AI generation data

    Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI PNGs can carry prompts, seeds, models, and workflows in plain text.

  • Content Credentials (C2PA)

    Provenance markers live outside ordinary EXIF. This local marker scan is conservative and is not cryptographic validation.

  • Date and time

    Capture and edit timestamps can reveal routines, whereabouts, and workflow history.

  • Device details

    Phone or camera make and model, lens details, and sometimes a serial number.

Do social media platforms strip EXIF data for you?

Many people assume Instagram, Facebook, or X will remove photo metadata automatically. Sometimes they do, for the copies other people see. But that behavior is not something you control, and it does not cover every way a photo leaves your device. Here is what actually happens.

  • Most large platforms strip EXIF from public copies

    When you post a photo, major social networks typically re-encode it and remove most EXIF data from the version shown to other users, mainly to save bandwidth, not to protect you. None of this is guaranteed: the behavior is undocumented, differs between platforms and features, and can change with any update. What a platform strips today is a side effect, not a promise you can rely on.

  • Your uploaded original may stay on their servers

    Stripping metadata from the public copy says nothing about the file you uploaded. Platforms can retain the original, including its GPS coordinates, timestamps, and device details, on their servers for processing, moderation, or analytics, subject to their own policies. Once a file leaves your device, you cannot inspect what is kept or for how long. The only version you can fully account for is the one you cleaned before uploading.

  • Direct sharing skips platform stripping entirely

    Email attachments, cloud-drive links, AirDrop, and messenger options that send the "original" or "document" version deliver your file byte-for-byte, metadata included. Forwarding a photo someone sent you passes their metadata along too. These everyday channels involve no platform re-encoding at all, so GPS positions, capture times, and device details travel exactly as they were stored in the file.

  • Clean locally before sharing: the step you control

    You cannot audit a platform's servers, but you can verify a file on your own device. Removing supported metadata from photos locally, before they leave your machine, is the one step in the chain you fully control and the only one you can independently double-check. How to verify your metadata is really gone

This tool re-scans every cleaned copy with the same scanner that inspected the original. But a privacy tool should not ask for blind trust. You can confirm the result yourself with independent, third-party tools on your own computer. Here are three common ways to check.

ExifTool: the reference command-line check

ExifTool is the free, widely trusted standard for reading image metadata. After installing it, run exiftool photo.jpg on your original and again on the cleaned copy, then compare the two listings. GPS positions, timestamps, camera details, and other supported metadata removed by this tool should no longer appear in the cleaned file. A few structural fields, like image dimensions, are part of the image itself and always remain.

Windows: check file properties in Explorer

On Windows, right-click the cleaned file, choose Properties, then open the Details tab. Explorer lists common EXIF fields such as camera model, date taken, and GPS. Compare it with the original file's Details tab; entries that held personal information should now be blank. Explorer shows only a subset of metadata, so ExifTool remains the more complete check.

macOS: use the inspector in Preview

On a Mac, open the cleaned image in Preview, choose Tools, then Show Inspector, and click the info tab. If the original showed EXIF or GPS panes, compare the two files side by side: the GPS tab should be gone and the EXIF listing reduced to structural basics. Preview reads the file directly, so it is a quick independent confirmation.

What the built-in re-scan does and doesn't

After cleaning, this tool automatically re-scans the output with the same scanner used for inspection and shows what remains. That confirms the supported metadata categories, including EXIF, XMP, IPTC, PNG text, comments, and consented provenance markers, were removed. It cannot vouch for anything outside its supported scope, such as pixel watermarks, so independent checks are always welcome.
